When it comes to serving LGBT youth experiencing homelessness, there’s always room for improvement. That’s why we’ve developed the True Inclusion Assessment Tool, which enables homeless youth serving organizations to assess their current level of LGBT-inclusive and affirming practices in a non-judgmental manner.
In 2014, we announced a partnership with Covenant House International. Through this partnership, we are working with all of the Covenant House sites in the United States in Canada to assess their current level of LGBT-inclusive and affirming care using our True Inclusion Tool.
All homeless youth service providers are invited to participate in the True Inclusion Assessment process, which consists of 3 separate phases:
- An organizational representative (or committee) uses the tool to assess the inclusivity of the organization’s policies, practices, physical space, and programs.
- Each employee completes an anonymous survey to assess their own individual practices, including their comfort and confidence levels in working with LGBT youth.
- Young people who access services at the organization fill out an anonymous survey to gauge their perceptions and experiences regarding LGBT inclusivity in the organization.
Following the completion of each phase, a work plan is developed to guide the organization’s forward movement toward creating a more LGBT inclusive and affirming program. We provide technical assistance and support to organizations as they implement the work plan.
