About the Organization
The mission of the Lavender Youth Recreation & Information Center (LYRIC) is to build community and inspire positive social change through educational enhancement, career training, health promotion, and leadership development with lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, queer, and questioning (LGBTQQ) youth, their families, and allies of all races, classes, genders, and abilities. From the time of LYRIC’s founding in 1988, LGBTQQ youth and adult allies have united to advocate for critical services and supports necessary to improve the lives of marginalized LGBTQQ youth.
LYRIC’s YOUTH ADVOCACY (“Case Management”) PROGRAM provides a continuum of case management services, connecting LGBTQQ youth to a network of services, including housing, employment, counseling, primary care, legal services, and more!
LYRIC’s SCHOOL-BASED PROGRAM provides a 12-week in-school leadership development class for a cohort of students at a school site. Students initiate projects to promote the visibility and inclusion of LGBTQQ identity among peers throughout their entire school. These efforts are complemented by LGBTQQ-inclusion trainings for teachers and LGBTQQ-affirming activities for parents.
LYRIC’s COMMUNITY BUILDING PROGRAM offers 3, peer-led groups celebrating transgender/gender-variant youth (Tuesdays, 4-6pm), LBTQQ young women (Wednesdays, 4-6pm), and GBTQQ young men (Fridays, 4-6pm). All groups are open to all LGBTQQ and ally youth.
